During lockdown, I was asked to be a part of a short maker series for Converse’s global Instagram…
The prompt was to ‘Create at Home’ with your chucks.
The following is the outcome. An Instagram Story video, mini interview, and most importantly, my ‘creation’ that I like to refer to as “Shoe Jackets.” These jackets, or second uppers, are made from upcycling scraps from textiles I had naturally dyed with indigo, sandalwood, osage orange, and other dried plants within the past few years. I’ve always believed those scraps would be able to have a second life one day.
Maximizing my swatch selection, the quilting pattern followed that of the small cuttings, creating the unique pattern. Since these were at-home lockdown creations, I had access to minimal tools. Instead of punching classic eyelets, I made a DIY gilly lacing system to make up for it.
A fun project and possible solution to explore in refreshing your chucks as instead of buying entirely new pairs (these are modeled over a pair of very well loved chuck 70s), the Shoe Jackets offer both a bit of personality and a future sustainable solution.
